Stephen is an experienced registered patent agent whose practice is focused on securing intellectual property in the U.S. and internationally, primarily in the areas of mechanical and electrical systems and devices, business methods, and software. His practice also includes patent and trademark searching and analysis, invalidity and infringement studies, patent portfolio development and management, and patent strategies.

Stephen's engineering education and research has been specialized in the areas of mechanical and electrical systems, design, acoustics, and dynamics. He complements his engineering education with business credentials, including M.B.A. certificates in the areas of management of technology and entrepreneurship.

Prior to joining the firm in 2005, Stephen was a graduate research assistant at Georgia Tech, an undergraduate research assistant at the University of Idaho, and an engineering intern at Agrium.

Stephen’s education and experience has enabled him to draft and prosecute patent applications for a broad scope of technologies including consumer products, packaging and packaging machines, e-commerce, mobile devices, telecommunications, building construction, geological exploration, measurement systems, signal processing, statistical methods, systems and methods for monitoring industrial plants, and nuclear energy.

Stephen has experience working with a diverse group of clients. He has counseled independent inventors, start-up companies, and medium-sized enterprises regarding patent strategies and developing and structuring patent portfolios. He has also worked closely with in-house counsel and inventors to draft and prosecute patent applications and conduct freedom-to-operate and patentability studies for Fortune 25 companies.
